Body shame. Performance shame. Social shame. We’ve all felt it. While conviction leads us to the freedom and forgiveness of God’s grace, shame pushes us into isolation, avoidance, and blame. But we can’t fight our way out from shame’s grasp on our own. The best way to combat shame is to come into the light, trading our guilt for the righteousness of Christ.
This is the hope that counselor and speaker Heather Davis Nelson holds out in her new book, Un-Ashamed:Healing Our Brokenness and Finding Freedom from Shame. Nelson explores the burden of shame and the difference between shame and guilt, lays out the ways Christ’s righteousness offers hope for different types of shame, and points out ways we can live shame free lives in our marriages, parenting, and churches.
I would recommend Un-Ashamed to anyone who has struggled with the burden of shame. Though it’s a relatively short book, it’s meaty. Each chapter also contains questions for discussion and exploration. I’d recommend reading it a chapter at a time, taking time to think through and apply the discussion and exploration question. Check it out.
