Advent is a season of expectant waiting.
We remember the waiting as the earth lay in darkness and yearned for the coming of the Light.
We remember the 400 years of silence shattered with a baby’s cry.
We remember the arms that had never held a child, now heavy with the weight of a promised miracle fulfilled.
We remember the wonder that the Creator of all stepped from heaven’s glory and blew milk bubbles in his sleep.
We remember.
We remember, but we also anticipate.
We look forward to the day when Christ returns in glorious victory.
We yearn for the day when death is defeated; when we can look sin and sorrow in the face and say “No More!”
We anticipate the day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
We long for the day when we join with that great multitude from every tribe and nation and worship before the throne.
We yearn.
And we wait.
We wait in pregnant pause for God to step into our personal stories.
We look to see what the wonder of Emmanuel, God with us means in our own lives.
We anticipate the light breaking into our darkness, transforming and redeeming.
We wait to see what it looks like when God enters our world.
Advent is a season of waiting, but it is also a season of waiting with hope. We remember that Christ has come; we rejoice that he will come again, and we watch for his coming in our present experience. We wait with expectancy, looking forward to the promised celebration. The waiting gives way to the celebration of Christmas.
As we celebrate this season of waiting, I want us to remember the biblical women who also waited. They waited for hope, for salvation, for redemption, and for love. In the waiting they found their places in His story. Let us see what we can learn from their seasons of waiting.
